Are you one of those people who dreads the thought of drawing names for a gift exchange at Aunt Rita’s? Who gets anxious flipping through the Canadian Tire catalog trying to find a gift idea that isn’t too expensive for Uncle Jean-Paul? Do you turn off your phones and computers so you don’t have to respond to all the holiday invitations? Yes? Don’t fear this nightmarish time of year anymore—follow me into festive simplicity!
*Read on—I’ll share some ideas here, but I’m well aware that what’s normal for some isn’t necessarily part of everyone’s daily life.*
I’ve always loved giving to others—for the sparkle in their eyes and the emotions that come with the exchange. It’s always a bit tricky to pick out a gift for an adult, even someone close to us, because their wants and needs are often intertwined. I’ve never had a lot of money, but I’ve always had a vivid imagination fueled by a need to create. Believe me, you don’t need a master’s degree in visual arts or literature to create and give a greeting card to your loved ones. It’s also a wonderful activity to do with kids—success guaranteed. If you’re afraid of markers and paper, know that there are people who put their creativity and talent at your service so you can give beautiful, original, personalized, and unique cards.
And while we’re on the subject of handmade items, why not support Quebec-made products at the same time? There are plenty of wonderful local companies that can bring joy to everyone during this lovely time of year. With a little online research, you’ll no doubt find a store or retail location near you. If not, take the plunge and make a purchase online. Just don’t forget to shop early and factor in delivery times so you don’t end up giving your Christmas gifts at Easter.
Not sure what to give? Why not give a gift card from one of your favorite stores? It’s a wonderful discovery for the recipient, combined with the joy of choosing something that will truly delight them. And why not present it in a card you made yourself?
Can’t afford to spoil the whole family by buying from local artisans? Tie a bow on your apron and get cooking! Who doesn’t love receiving a small dish or dessert cooked in your kitchen with all your love? Plus, you can accommodate your vegan cousin and gluten-intolerant aunt by carefully selecting your recipes. This is also very useful if you’re hosting a potluck dinner where everyone brings a little something to eat.
Do you have a gift exchange coming up? Whether it’s a fun one or not, think about giving your old items a second life before buying something new. I’m not telling you to give away your obsolete junk, but we all have nice things that are still usable but no longer suit us. Be creative and transform them, improve them, make them more beautiful, and make people happy without breaking the bank.
No matter who you’re giving a gift to, always keep in mind that the thought is often more valuable than the gift itself. Your grandmother will likely be happier to have a beautiful photo of you to hang on her walls than to receive something she won’t really use. She already has everything anyway!
Focus on the moment, on the connection, and on love rather than on how much you spend to “make someone happy.” Remember that if you’re invited, it’s because your presence matters. The people you invite are precious to you. Everything else is just a bonus. Be creative, be generous with your time and energy, and spend a magical moment with the people you love.
Happy Holidays!
