When December Comes

When December 1st rolls around, a magical atmosphere takes hold. We start planning for the holiday season at the daycare, and the music has already begun in November. As we watch the snowflakes fall gently, it’s time to think about the things that perfectly complement the festive routine of this cherished time of year for little ones (and those who are still young at heart).

There’s one scent that brings that moment to mind for me: the Christmas tree. What a wonderful scent—both comforting and exciting at the same time. I love going with my family to pick out our “king of the forest.” Last year, we started a brand-new tradition: cutting down our own tree. So we got together with our group of friends and went in search of our magnificent tree. The atmosphere, the hot chocolate, the little shop that sold everything—what wonderful memories I have of that day. I can’t wait to do it all over again.

Next, I plan all the holiday “food.” I love baking… and wine! I pour myself a glass, open Pinterest and I’m on the hunt for a new chocolate cookie recipe, ideas for decorating my Christmas cake, and ways to make my own fondant. I love the smell of the holidays in the house with all that cinnamon and those delicious spices!

There’s also another tradition: holiday outfits!! That’s right—all those family gatherings, office parties, and get-togethers with friends. You’ve got to look presentable (I’m thinking of you, Mom, who can’t wait to take the time to do your makeup, hair, and get dressed), whether the kids are cute and that the husband wears a sweater or shirt that’s approved. You’ll need to go shopping for shoes, tights, and the perfect accessories for you and your kids. I’m always looking forward to seeing the pretty dresses and little outfits arrive in the stores; my daughters love picking out their outfits. And I love taking the time to pick out a nice sweater for my partner, who knows full well that he’ll have to wear it during visits. And when everyone has their little kit which game, I can look for a gift idea for the gift exchange at work.

But my number-one tradition when December rolls around is the gingerbread latte. I rush to get one as soon as it’s available, and I happily drink my “venti” every Friday. Since they say visualization is a positive thing, I also like to imagine myself strolling down the aisles with my coffee in hand. With my limited-edition cup in hand, I picture myself finishing my shopping like a pro—and in record time!! The taste of this delicious little treat keeps a smile on my face as I weave through the crowds to do my last-minute shopping. (I like to tell myself that someday I’ll be ahead of the game.)

Whatever your traditions may be, they all come down to the same thing. Whether it’s taking a family photo for holiday cards, buying cozy pajamas, mischievous elves, or having brunch while watching a movie (“Home Alone”), all these traditions are meant to bring family and friends together, bring them joy, and spoil them. All these traditions serve as a common thread that allows us to celebrate the people we love once a year.
