There are days when our kids drive us crazy—they drain all our energy and almost (and I mean almost!) make us want to trade them in, sell them on Kijiji, or even give them away! But there are also those wonderful moments when our little angels’ presence fills us with deep happiness. With just a small gesture of affection, they can recharge our batteries and give us the strength to keep doing our job as parents.
Here’s an example:
The other day, in the car on the way back from a family activity, I was lost in my thoughts. It hadn’t really been a good day—or rather, it hadn’t been a good stretch of time. In fact, I was just physically and mentally exhausted. On the way home, my little girl asked me for a pen. After a few minutes, she gave me back my pen and handed me a pink piece of paper. This pink paper was filled with hearts she had drawn!!! She then asked me to look at the other side of the paper, where she had written: “I love you, Mom!” It’s amazing how much that little message warmed my heart. It was simple and no-frills. It was just a little drawing done with a pen in the car, but that drawing came at just the right moment that day to put a smile back on my face and lift my spirits. I don’t know if she sensed my sadness, but at that precise moment, her little surprise did me a world of good.
My little princess does this kind of thing every now and then. One night, I found her lying in my bed, even though I’d tucked her into her own bed earlier that evening. My Sleeping Beauty had taken the opportunity to stick Post-its on the pillow next to her with little love notes for me! So cute!
Another day, she’d stuck a string of Post-its along the edge of her bed with messages for me. My little sweetheart knows that every night before I go to bed, I go to watch her sleep in her bed, and she knew I’d see her message. I’m always so happy, and it makes me so glad every time she gives me a lovely surprise like that!
I love the spontaneous hugs we didn’t even ask for, the “Mommy, I love you”s, and the wet kisses. Our kids have a way of wearing us out sometimes, but these little moments of magical happiness light up my days and make me a truly happy mom!
