My daughter,
Growing up in 2020 is nothing like I expected. Even without a pandemic, I think motherhood in general has really taken over my life, two years after giving birth.
Last week, COVID-19 cases were reported at your daycare. The result? A bittersweet week off with Mom at home. Working from home is honestly a great invention, but you, little human who’s just trying to make sense of the world around you, aren’t exactly my favorite coworker.
I had to swallow my pride, especially since I’d just started this new job. Thank goodness! My manager was very understanding and even joked, “Good luck with your little explorer—enjoy your time with her. Don’t stress about work; it’ll be waiting for you with open arms next week.”
Before continuing with the recap of our week, I want to tip my hat to my daughter’s teachers, who spend the ENTIRE WEEK entertaining a group of 2- to 3-year-olds: playing, singing, doing crafts—through all the laughter and tears.
And here I was thinking parents were exaggerating about the “terrible twos”… My daughter’s favorite word is “NO!” and screaming is her favorite way to get our attention. She’s curious and adventurous, funny and dramatic. When I kiss her on the side of her forehead while she’s sitting on the couch, she leans in and gives me a peck on the cheek.
And suddenly, Mom feels guilty. I’m not as cool as daycare. I’m pulling out all the stops—I’ve set up a varied daily schedule. Monday: nursery rhymes. Tuesday: coloring. Wednesday: building blocks. Thursday: TV and pajamas. Finally, Friday: a party with a little bit of everything.
The guilt lingers: Did we go outside to play enough? Did she sleep too little or too much today? Does she look happy? Does she understand that I love her and that I’m doing my best?
Why am I putting myself through this, anyway? All my friends are just as good at being moms as I am. I don’t do anything more or better than they do—and vice versa. I’ve never seen any bad parenting in my circle of friends. I’d also like to thank certain moms who share the real story on social media—not just the good stuff, but the ugly, the messy, the laughter, the tears, the amazing days, and the exhausting ones. It helps us get through the weeks… And we’re doing a great job!
