My Mother-in-Law Isn't a Monster

I sometimes see posts or articles about stepmothers. More often than not, these pieces are filled with hatred, toxic relationships, and misunderstandings on both sides. I see stories of intrusive, overbearing, and high-strung stepmothers—unpleasant and pointless relationships.

My mother-in-law, on the other hand, is the complete opposite of everything mentioned above. She’s a gentle and endearing woman. A loving, devoted grandmother—and probably the most patient and tolerant woman I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. A real mom, just like the ones you see in movies! Food in abundance, a soft and understanding voice.

For many of you, the nightmare is having your spouse’s mother show up at your house for a few days. For me, it’s a very pleasant time. She’s unobtrusive—you know she’s there because you see her and because certain chores get done without you having to say or do a thing. She savors every meal you make as if it were haute cuisine. She argues a little with you about putting everything in the dishwasher after the meal. She tucks the kids in. No, actually, she reads them a story or two and then stays with them until they fall asleep. In fact, I’m always a little sad when she leaves after her visit.

This charming woman calls very regularly to check in on the whole family. Retired for a few years now, she’s been a constant presence ever since our first child was born. Suffice it to say that she drove the three-hour trip that separated us at the time to come give me a little respite after a truly exhausting delivery. She’s been there in her own way at many stages of your life, and I can’t thank her enough for that.

My mother-in-law isn’t a monster, and I adore her.
