Unable to Let You Go

It’s no longer just a path leading away; our paths now lie in two completely different places, at opposite ends of the spectrum. Is this what they call a lost friendship? Was it even a friendship to begin with? Were you in my life simply because you weren’t in the life of that person who’s so important to me? I feel like the answer is yes! Unfortunately!

I opened up to you, I talked to you, I shared my worries, my successes, and my failures with you; I let you into my life—and into my daughter’s as well. You held an important place in my life, but now I feel like it was a one-sided friendship. Were you really interested? Did you really care about me? As for me, I can tell you that I did! Unfortunately!

How long did I struggle in this relationship? Even after you were no longer in her life? I really wanted you to be at my wedding—you truly mattered to me—and I really wanted to hang out with you and my girl. I was sincere, and I believed you were too, with all your excuses and promises. How much longer am I going to keep you in my contacts? How much longer am I going to let you have the privilege of seeing my girlfriend’s best moments? No idea! Because you were too important! Unfortunately!

My daughter, for her part, grew attached to you. She’d smile when she saw you; you came to her first birthday; you were there when I gave birth; you were always there for her. However, after so many empty promises, she eventually stopped seeing you. How long am I going to let those pretty words stay in my daughter’s life? I tell myself that maybe one day you’ll come back—there’s still a little hope inside me. Unfortunately!

One day, I’ll have to say goodbye to you, because you decided our friendship wasn’t worth it. You chose to leave my daughter behind, feeding me sweet lies that you’d be there for her. I wanted to believe it too many times; I thought we were closer than that. I thought that finally, I’d found a friend—someone who’d be there for me and my family.

Right now, I tell myself I can’t let you go, but I’ll have to, so that our paths stop crossing and can continue moving forward separately. Of course, someone else will take your place, but from now on, I’ll be more wary. Unfortunately!
