Tonight, I helped a woman not give up on her dreams. I shared some tips from my experience as an entrepreneur to help her with her business. I could have bragged about my own business and convinced her to come work with me. Who would that have helped? Me, not her. She’ll recognize herself in this, and I’d like to thank you because you inspired me to write this.
I don’t need to tell you that the world out there is hostile enough for women, thank you very much. It gets even worse when you become a mom. All over social media, we see “bashing” and “shaming,” often presented in a humorous way, as if to make it go down easier. Otherwise, someone writes a mean comment, adds a Minion image, and suddenly it’s supposed to make the pill easier to swallow.
I’ve had a tough year. Between a struggling business, major depression, and my son’s autism diagnosis—all of which made life difficult for me—I found what gave me wings. I read somewhere that if you want to get through a tough time more easily, help those who are going through the same thing as you. That’s what I did. I discovered I have a gift for encouraging and bringing joy to others. Since then, I’ve wanted to help as many women as possible feel fulfilled and happy. I want to help as many women as possible see just how wonderful they are and how full of incredible potential they are. Seeing them persevere, succeed, and dream makes me feel so good—and it’s given me a new lease on life to keep going myself. Today, I have a thriving business, I’ve overcome my depression, and my son’s autism is the most beautiful gift our family could ask for.
What if we stopped comparing ourselves to others? What if we stopped putting ourselves down? What if we stopped looking out for our own interests and tried to look out for others’ instead? Instead of envying our neighbor’s gorgeous flower bed, why not compliment her on her talent? What if, instead of whining because the waitress at the restaurant looks dumb, we gave her a nice compliment to brighten her day? Don’t you think we’d live in a better world? Change starts with ourselves, ladies, so let’s change the world one heart at a time.
