Thanks to you

You’ve been a part of my life for a decade. We were there for each other at some times more than others. All I knew back then was that the time I spent with you did me a world of good. Even if there were long stretches when our paths didn’t cross.

Then one day, you came back into my life more regularly, at a specific moment when, without realizing it, I needed you the most. I didn’t even realize at the time just how much you were going to change everything.

You managed to scale all the walls I’d spent years building so firmly. You knew how to soothe wounds I thought were impossible to heal. I let you see the scars the past had left behind—the ones I’d never dared show anyone. I let my guard down, and I didn’t even think that was possible.

I unwittingly gave you access to every corner of my mind, and I have to admit that it scares me. After all, you’re the first person who’s managed to get this far. Without meaning to, I’ve given you every weapon you could possibly need if you ever wanted to destroy me. And I’ve never felt so vulnerable.

I still don’t understand why you didn’t run away when you saw how broken I was inside. I still don’t understand why you soothe my demons this way. Or why it seems so natural to you.

You’re everything I don’t know. And because of that, you’re forcing me to work on myself because, for the first time, I want to do better and do everything right. Thanks to you, I want to be the best version of myself. At least, to try my very best.

I just want to thank you for absolutely everything. But most of all, thank you for being there the way you do so well. Thank you for being honest and nonjudgmental. Thank you for being who you are.
