I Don't Like Halloween

The ghoulish decorations scare me or gross me out.

I’ve always hated horror movies.

I’m afraid of blood—even fake blood.

I hate being scared.

Scary, gory books: not my thing.

I refuse to take my kids to haunted houses and enjoy seeing the look of terror on their faces. No, thank you.

I refuse to endorse macabre or scary costumes.

I don’t like Halloween.

Personally, when Halloween is just around the corner—like right now—I’m already looking forward to Christmas. Yes, already! That’s because I love Christmas, unlike Halloween! The lights, the joy, and the happiness!

Am I the only one who hates Halloween this much? I don’t know, but I’ve made a resolution this year! To be able to fit in with the crowd and celebrate Halloween a little, we’ll do it our way! That means a few things.

No gory stuff.

No blood—not even fake blood.

No haunted houses.

No horror movies.

A joyful, lively Halloween.

We’ll dress up as something that brings us joy. My kids have chosen a butterfly and a friendly crocodile.

We’ll decorate the house with things that evoke fall, life, and joy: pumpkins, lights, and streamers. Colors, a fan, and even more pumpkins.

We’ll hand out candy instead of going door-to-door. Maybe we’ll visit some houses in the neighborhood, but most importantly, we’ll give. My kids will learn many lessons from this act of giving.

I don’t know if Halloween will always be like this for us, but I do know that I’ll never like the macabre or depictions of death. That’s just who I am, and I won’t force myself to change. I love joy, life, and colors! That’s why I want to bring happiness and color to our Halloween! Maybe I’ll even learn to appreciate this holiday.

Do you like Halloween? How do you celebrate it?
