Ah! The “friend zone.” So often hated during my single days, but so much appreciated today, now that I’m in a relationship.
My new status as a “non-single mom” follows me everywhere. Among other things, it lets me have “bros” at the office—real guy friends, with no ambiguity and no hassle.
It lets me get an honest perspective on men, but also share my female point of view with them. We’re not that different after all!
I’ve even developed a friendly crush on one of my coworkers. I respect him so much—he has strong values, a deep understanding of many topics, and on top of that, he’s a great audience for my daily jokes.
Coming from a small town, it wasn’t until 2013, once I was in CEGEP, that I started hanging out with people from different ethnic backgrounds.
Fate had a hand in it—we ended up taking classes together at the same time.
We’re the same age, but our personalities are complete opposites, and we don’t have the same medium- or long-term goals at all. That’s why we get along so well, in my opinion. I’m a bundle of nerves, and he’s as calm as can be.
Without me even asking, during lunch break, he let me try his mom’s home cooking a few times. Then it sort of became a weekly tradition to bring things to eat or drink—to share and introduce to each other.
We haven’t known each other for very long, but you can never have too many friends. I’m glad to have found someone as honest and awesome as my “partner in crime” for this new professional challenge.
