What about us?

Another one. Again. Yet another couple that fell apart under the weight of everyday life combined with an atypical, frantic pace.

What about us?

Another one. Again. Yet another couple that fell apart under the weight of everyday life combined with an atypical, frantic pace. And yet, with them, we thought their relationship was rock-solid… Even rock crumbles.

What about us? Do you still love me? Do I still love you? Will this unusual, frantic pace of life combined with the weight of daily life get the better of us? Or does this crazy life of ours still fulfill us? I’m sad, I’m scared…

Yet, when I imagine myself without you, my heart tightens until it hurts. My hands search for a head, a neck, shoulders to rest on. I’m short of breath, I feel dizzy, and all of a sudden, just like that, the butterflies wake up and reassure me that everything is okay. Yes, I love you.

Then I meet your gaze, distraught to see all this pain, searching for the answer to the question that was burning on my lips just five minutes ago. Yes, you love me.

So what do we do? I don’t want our foundation to crumble. I don’t want our great oak tree to crack. I want our lighthouse to keep breaking the waves—so that even as the rocks all around it erode, it remains strong and solid, shining brightly through the storm.

Promises, efforts, and getaways. Family antics and spur-of-the-moment decisions. Real conversations, without shying away from the “boring” and the difficult, just like the lighthouse that faces the approaching storm head-on and with pride.

We’re not immune. I just want to keep taking care of it. I want to keep believing in it.

Despite the weight of everyday life. Despite our atypical and frenetic pace of life. Despite this crazy life of ours.
