Mind your own business!

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I’m convinced I’m certainly not the only one going through this. I have people in my family who absolutely insist on having the final say on everything—how I raise my kids, how many kids I’ll have, what I’m allowed to buy for them, for myself, and so on.

At first, I wanted to follow their recommendations. I thought their advice was sound. Then I realized that my life wasn’t theirs, that our situations were different, and that some of that advice didn’t suit me at all. Since I didn’t want to follow the recommendations that were so graciously offered to me without my even asking for their opinion, friction set in. My children have occasionally borne the brunt of it. Each time, I let the dust settle and tried to make things right for them. Because they shouldn’t have to be deprived of people who are important to them because of me or anyone else.

What I actually regret is simply the fact that, while I don’t necessarily ask for people’s advice on raising my children, they take it upon themselves to offer unsolicited comments. I’m sure they just want to help, but I’d really appreciate it if they’d mind their own business. There are surely many things they do that I don’t agree with, but I keep quiet because it’s not my life—it’s theirs, and they make their own choices. However, if I ask for their opinion, then I’ll have to accept that their answer might not be what I wanted to hear.

You’ve probably noticed that I’m being rather vague when it comes to naming people. I’ll also be posting this anonymously. Because despite everything, I still care about these people, who would like to meddle in my life in a way that’s very different from the role I’d like them to play in it. It’s not always easy to say or admit that. I hope that if you’re going through a similar situation, you’ll be able to make your voice heard without damaging your relationship with these people.
