Ode to My Grandfather

Most little girls look up to their fathers, and that’s perfectly normal. For me, it’s my grandfather. I have unconditional admiration for this man who taught me countless little things.

This passionate man taught me love and patience. Determination and hard work. In my little-girl eyes, my grandfather knew everything there was to know. If I wanted to know something, he was THE go-to person! He introduced me to gardening, fishing, hunting, and a million other things that were close to his heart. This man served as my role model until I grew up and became independent.

I’m one of those people who can be proud to have introduced my child to a man I admire so much. My children are lucky to spend time with this man who’s so important to me and to learn a little from him. What child can boast about going fishing with their great-grandfather? Not many, unfortunately.

My grandfather is a strong and upright man. I know, sadly, that he won’t be with us forever. I often cross my fingers, hoping my children can continue to benefit from his wisdom for a long time to come. I was fortunate to have my great-grandmother by my side for 25 years. I like to naively believe that my children will have the same luck with him, even though I know full well that they probably won’t have that good fortune. One day, he’ll have to leave us, but I hope with all my heart that he’ll be with us long enough for my children to create unforgettable memories. That they’ll be old enough for what this man has to offer them to take root within them. So that my children can hold on to a little piece of him.

One day, you’ll leave, but know that I love you the way a daughter loves her father. Because deep in my heart, that’s what you are—a real dad.

I love you, Carol xxx
