Our Bond, My Big Boys

Ever since the day I decided to have children, I knew I would fall in love with this new part of myself. I knew I was deeply meant to be a mom.

I loved being pregnant. Every single time. Despite the nausea, the vomiting, the backaches, the exhaustion… I fully savored the joy of carrying life within me. I loved giving birth. Despite the pain, the waiting, the overwhelming exhaustion, the pushing, the C-section. I loved so much being the person who brought you into this world.

I loved taking care of my babies—breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, changing diapers, wiping runny noses, rocking, singing, cuddling—but I expected that. From the very first minute I decided to start a family.

What I didn’t know—and this is what’s even more wonderful—is that, over time, I’ve developed an extraordinary relationship with each and every one of you.

You’re all so different, but my love for you is so great. I love our moments of togetherness when we start cracking jokes and talking nonsense. When you make me laugh with your quick-witted responses, your ability to make connections on the spot—all while being funny.

I love our crazy side, the one we all share together. Making up words, speaking a language that doesn’t exist, singing anything at random, dancing for no reason at all.

I love the things we share. When I tell you about my childhood—what I went through and how. When you tell me about your lives. When we discuss a topic we saw on TV and you’re able to analyze it, form opinions, and keep an open mind.

I love it when you teach me things I didn’t know. When we get stuck on a topic and Google becomes our best friend.

I love it when I have to set you straight. And even though you’re frustrated in the moment, I can see in your eyes that you understand. I love the discussions that follow, where you take the time to explain your point of view to me and show openness to understanding mine.

I love the help you give me. I love cooking with you, building a patio, driving, folding laundry, and going grocery shopping. Okay, I’ll admit it—these aren’t the most exciting tasks. But I love the moments we share, our conversations, and how you’re learning during these times.

Having teenagers seemed like a distant prospect and a phase I’d have to get through. I didn’t know how much seeing you become independent and grown-up would make me so happy and proud—and how much it would bring me closer to you.

I love you even more with every day that life gives me.
