When we first got together, my boyfriend was 31 and I was 20. I was a young adult who was still a bit naive, and he was a man who’d already been through a lot. Despite my loved ones’ concerns, I never felt a gap between us because of our ages. In fact, most of the time, I’m the one who feels like an old lady next to him. He’s remained an eternal teenager—young at heart and in spirit—and that’s what charmed me in the first place. As for me, I’ve always been very (too) mature for my age, always serious and focused on what I’m doing.
Of course, there are moments when I realize he’s getting older: when he hurts his back roughhousing with the kids, when he has trouble digesting pizza sauce, or when I notice that, as the years go by, gray hair is taking over his head and beard. It sometimes makes him self-conscious, whereas personally, I find it totally sexy! It gives him such incredible charm!
Our age difference also leads to some funny moments when we talk about our childhoods. We realize that when he was out there goofing around with his friends, I had barely emerged from my mother’s womb. Or when he can’t understand why I’ve never seen a certain movie and realizes that this masterpiece from his youth came out when I was barely 2 or 3 years old…
I admit I was a little shocked when I was planning his 40th birthday party. I realized I was still in my twenties while my man was just entering his forties!
I also know other couples with a significant age gap, and they’re all a joy to watch! In reality, we know full well that age doesn’t mean anything—they’re just numbers. I fell in love with him, and his age certainly wouldn’t have changed a thing. Who would have thought that my partner, who’s 11 years older than me, would be the one to make me feel younger—and that I, with my youthful energy, would help him gain maturity? The best of both worlds!
