Winning the Jackpot

Do you ever dream about winning a huge amount of money in the lottery? Dreaming that, with a wave of a magic wand, you pay off all your debts and move into a cute little house.

To be able to make all your wildest dreams come true. To have the time and money to carry out lots of little projects with family and friends… Wow! What a joy just to think about it!

Being able to help all your friends and family financially so that everyone can benefit from this windfall. Having that famous winning ticket that will change your whole life.

Every time I buy a lottery ticket, the day before the drawing, I always dream about the endless possibilities that would open up for me.

I wonder if becoming rich overnight changes who we are. I’d like to believe not—that it just changes our perspective and our life plans. Do we become more “stingy” out of fear of losing our wealth? Do we forget our financial past and start throwing money around? Do we keep working—full-time or part-time—just to stay busy, or would that shock our coworkers?

Here’s what I would definitely do:

  • Pay off all my small debts and my spouse’s: student loans, credit cards, and lines of credit.
  • Give half of my fortune to my spouse
  • Help my brother financially: pay off his student loan and give him a student allowance instead. Pay off his credit card balance in full and have him receive his credit card statements so I can monitor and help him manage his expenses.
  • Spoil my dear mom, go on trips, stay at nice hotels and dine at nice restaurants, and support her financially.
  • Give a certain amount of money to all my friends so they can enjoy my wealth and treat themselves.
  • Buy a high-quality mattress and bed frame, because sleeping well is amazing!
  • Buy new furniture, a living room set, and redecorate my apartment.
  • Start looking for a house, without rushing.
  • Contribute the maximum allowed amount to a TFSA every year.
  • Plan my dream wedding.

Let's face it, there are plenty of things I'll be able to accomplish in the long run without winning the lottery jackpot.

Ah! It’s nice to dream—and best of all, it’s free!
